Hi Bron
I am working on being a writer and feel in my heart Romance is my genre. You are committed and passionate about it yourself. Can I ask what clinched it for you? Has your writing evolved into Romance gradually or have you more or less always headed toward it?
It is about people and their journeys for me and I am always 'listening in' to people's lives and musing about how their experiences sound like Romance fiction waiting it be written!
Thankyou for championing Contemporary Romance genre!

I agree, Natalie - it is hard! As well as getting all the details and setting right, you have to have a realistic romance - even if one or more of the characters are werewolves (or shapeshifters, or whatever...), the emotions have to ring true for the reader. No copping out by having the characters give up, or die :-)

Here Here Bron!! I think it's actually harder to write a romance because there's soo much of it out there that readers have become very fickle and will definitely tell you if you've gotten things wrong with time period or even background to werewolves...

Thanks, Maureen. I'm glad you liked it! I think that one of the problems we've faced as romance readers and writers is that we don't have a strong, positive, literary (for want of a better word) framework for talking about the genre. Until recently, it hasn't been discussed seriously in a positive way in literary or academic circles, so the general understanding of the genre is fairly thin. We know what we love, but often not why we love it, and why it's important.

However, that is definitely changing, and academics such as those who blog at Teach Me Tonight and many other readers and writers are doing a great job in researching and discussing the genre, in very thoughtful ways.

I think it's an exciting time to be part of the genre!

Wow. Bron. What an amazing essay. Great job. I always get so defensive when I try to defend the genre to people who don't seem to think I'll be offended when they suggest what I write is "trash" or "fluff" or "porn".

From now on, I'm going to point them to your essay. :-)
