Great news!

Today’s a big day in the romance writing community – it’s the announcements of the finalists in the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Awards for unpublished manuscripts, and RITA awards for published manuscripts.

Members of the RWA Board have the very pleasant task of contacting the finalists by phone to notify them, although its such a thundering honour to final, that they probably get ear damage from all the squeeing! The calls are supposed to start at about 8am on Thursday morning, US time – but since that’s the wee small hours Australian time, some of the board members phone Australian finalists early, while we’re still awake on our side of the world – although the finalists are supposed to keep it to themselves until the ‘official’ calling time begins.

Before I went to bed last night, there were already a few unofficial announcements on Australian loops, and I was thrilled to see two friends are RITA finalists, and to hear of at least three Golden Heart finalists. Australians are usually well-represented in the finalist lists, and this year is looking good, too!

Of course, I’d been hoping for the phone to ring all afternoon, as Dark Country was entered in the RITAs. But alas, it stayed silent. It was a slim chance, I knew, and I hadn’t been holding my breath. So I went to bed about 11pm, but lay awake for a while, finally drifting off at about midnight.

The phone woke me at 12.22am. And it wasn’t someone from Gordon’s work with a network breakdown. It was a lovely lady from RWAmerica, to tell me that Dark Country is a finalist in the romantic suspense category of the RITAs!

It’s now 1.30am, and I’m still grinning from ear to ear, and unlikely to go back to sleep for a while!

I’ll put up a full list of Australian RITA and GH finalists later today, when they’re all announced.

ETA: The full lists of finalists are now on the RWAmerica website – RITA Finalists and Golden Heart Finalists.

Super congrats to all the finalists in both awards! And special congratulations to the Australian finalists: in the RITAs, Elizabeth Rolls, and Kelly Hunter; and in the Golden Heart, Kylie Griffin, Vanessa Barneveld, Gabrielly Luthy, and Robyn Enlund.

That’s three Australians (including me) in the RITAs and four in the Golden Heart – what a great showing, Australia!

Treasure Hunt giveaway!

Over the past few months, I and three other authors of novels set in the Australian outback have got together online to do some promotion. While we each have different writing styles, our books probably appeal to a similar audience, as they’re set in various parts of regional Australia that we each know well, and all contain romantic elements and often suspense elements, too. And since many of our readers read books much faster than we can write them, it’s good to be able to suggest other books that might appeal!

The four of us – Fleur McDonald, Helene Young, Fiona Palmer, and I – now have a FaceBook page: Australian Outback Romances and Mysteries. If you’re on FaceBook, please visit and say hello, and become a fan of our page, so that you can keep up with the news from all four of us.

I mentioned Helene’s new release, Border Watch, a couple of posts ago – and Fleur has a new book out in April, Blue Skies. So, to celebrate Fleur’s and Helene’s new releases, we’re running a Treasure Hunt Giveaway.

We’re giving away a collection of not one, not two, not three, but FOUR signed books to one lucky winner! The books are:
• Blue Skies, by Fleur McDonald
• Border Watch, by Helene Young
• The Family Farm, by Fiona Palmer
• Dark Country, by Bronwyn Parry

Two runners up will each receive a signed book; the first runner-up can choose one book from the four, and the second runner-up can choose one book from the remaining three.

So, how do you enter? It’s a treasure hunt, so you need to find the answers to four questions – the answers can easily be found in the first chapters of each book, which you can find by clicking on the link on the book title. The four questions are:

1. In Fleur McDonald’s Blue Skies, who was with Amanda, when she heard the terrible news?

2. In Helene Young’s Border Watch, what is the name of the snack bar caretaker who greets Morgan and Sam when they are out for their early morning run?

3. In Fiona Palmer’s The Family Farm, what did Izzy’s mum have in her gold locket that hung around her neck?

4. In Bronwyn Parry’s Dark Country, what did Kris put into the boot (trunk) of Gil’s car?

When you’ve found all four answers, come back to this post, and submit your entry. Entries close at midnight on Friday, March 26th, Eastern Australian time (about 9am Friday morning, US Eastern time). We’ll draw the winner and two runners-up from the correct entries.

Wherever you live on the planet, as long as there’s a postal service, you’re eligible to enter – but please, to keep it fair, only one entry per person!

The form requires your email address, but we do respect your privacy and we will not publish, sell, giveaway, or do anything annoying with your email address – we’ll use if only for notifying winners.

Thanks for playing along with us – good luck in the draw!

Edited 27 March: This contest is now closed.

The latest old news

I love history. My Bachelors degree is in history – a mix of medieval, early modern, and Australian history, with emphasis on social history. I’m fascinated by everyday life, and the experiences of ordinary people.

So, Gordon’s new blog – Old news from Armidale and New England – is definitely of interest to me, and has been the prompt for much discussion over the dinner table. He’s browsing through the National Library’s Historic Australian Newspapers site, and finding amongst the scanned and digitised newspapers items related to the New England region. Each day he posts an article or two, and I enjoy reading what he’s found.

One of today’s stories is from a newspaper dated 5 November 1905, and tells of the tragedy of a young woman who fell over a precipice – at a gorge that is not very far from our place. The young woman fell 900 hundred feet and sadly died.

On a more cheerful note, another story he’s reported today is the opening of radio station 2AD, in February 1936, by David Drummond, a local man and also state Minister for Education. Radio 2AD is still going strong, seventy-three years later! (And David Drummond’s grandson, Jim Belshaw, now writes a blog focusing on New England history and happenings.)

I could spend hours – days! – browsing through the newspaper archives myself, and yes, I did spend an evening a day or two ago reading the Maitland Mercury from 1843, but I’ll have to limit my time otherwise I might get lost forever… so maybe I’ll make do for a while with the snippets Gordon posts 🙂

(Oh, and yes, there possibly will be a historical novel sometime in my writing future.. but not for a while!)

Vote for your favourite books

Angus & Robertson, one of Australia’s major bookselling chains, is running a contest to find Australia’s top 100 books. From the website:

The Angus & Robertson Top 100 is a list of the 100 best books, as voted by you. Vote for your favourite book now to see it on the new list when it launches in July, plus go into the draw to win some great prizes!

If you’d like to vote (and be eligible to win prizes!), you’ll need to register on the Angus & Robertson website. You can then vote for up to 10 books – and they can be any of the over 2 million books A&R have listed on their website. But you can only vote once for each of your ten books.

Voting closes on March 31st, so that gives you a few weeks to decide which books you want to see in the Top 100!

Hmm… I’d better start thinking about what books I want to vote for…
